Meet the South American Rhea

Meet the South American Rhea

We had seen rheas almost every day of our trip, but they were always far away, and then we got lucky when this male and his brood crossed the road right in front of us. Rheas are related to ostrich & emu, and have ‘near threatened’ status as they are hunted for food, feathers, or killed by farmers who consider them pests. The male does all of the work of rearing the young, from building the nest, laying on the eggs, and raising the young, as the female takes off after laying the eggs to mate again. Such tramps!
