Liberdade. The Japanese district of Sao Paulo.

Andrea & Gary pause for a moment in the crowded streets of Liberdade, a predominately Japanese neighborhood just outside the city center of Sao Paulo. Every Sunday here is an open street fair encompassing many blocks where you can buy and eat just about anything Japanese. It’s a madhouse in front of the vendors selling noodles, dumplings, and shrimp fritters, but the food is very much worth battling the hungry hordes. Anything you want from Bonsai to bamboo tongue scrapers can be bought for cheap here.

Fac to id: Sao Paulo is home to the largest contingent of Japanese people living outside of Japan. The first Japanese immigrated here to fill the need for workers on coffee plantations in the early 1900’s and later as refugees that fled to Brasil after WWII.
