Projecto Tarmar

This is a photo of a marine turtle recovering from accidentally being caught by fishermen at the Projecto Tarmar which is a center for rescued turtles and protection of the beaches where they lay their eggs, of which there are many all up and down the large coast of Brasil. In many cases, the scientists collect the turtle eggs from the nests, hatch them at the facility, and release the baby turtles directly into the ocean to prevent predation, or poachers from harvesting the eggs before they hatch. We visited the Tarmar Project while we were in Ubatuba (Beach townin the southern part of Rio de Janeiro state).
